A Beautiful Wedding

HOME > WEDDING VOWS & CEREMONY BREAKING OF THE GLASS CEREMONY

In the Jewish faith the Breaking of the Glass signifies the destruction of the great temple in Jerusalem and serves as a reaffirmation of the couple's faith in God. The Breaking of the Glass ceremony occurs after the exchange of the wedding rings, although the Groom doesn't break the glass until after the pronouncement of the couple as husband and wife. The "glass" is wrapped in a decorative cloth or dinner napkin and placed between the couple. A thin wine or drinking glass can be used. A light bulb also works well.

BREAKING OF THE GLASS

In the Jewish faith the breaking of the glass signifies the destruction of the great temple in Jerusalem.  Its spiritual significance is the reaffirmation of our faith in God.

This ceremony serves to remind us of two very important aspects of a marriage. BRIDE and GROOM—and everyone—should consider these marriage vows as an irrevocable act—just as permanent and final as the breaking of this glass is unchangeable.

But the breaking of the glass is a warning of the frailty of a marriage. That sometimes a single thoughtless act, breech of trust, or infidelity can damage a marriage in ways that are very difficult to undo—just as it would be so difficult to undo the breaking of this glass. Knowing that this marriage is permanent, BRIDE and GROOM should strive to show each other the love and respect befitting their spouse and love of their life.

Our prayer today is that their lives together would be longer than it would take to fit these broken pieces of glass back together again.

BRIDE and GROOM... In as much as you have each pledged to each other your lifelong commitment, love and devotion, by the authority vested in my by the State of California, I now pronounce you husband and wife.

After the pronouncement of husband and wife, the Groom steps on the glass.
